Of course radio influences what people listen to, in the same way that advertising influences what products people buy. I don't listen to Radio 1 any more, and here in the US there's no national all genres radio station, yet I find new music to like all the time. How? From Pandora, LastFm, XM radio, music forums, Amazon's "if you like X then you'll like Y" recommendations. Not to mention DJs & friends. Arctic Monkeys charted from ZERO radio play, just MySpace & their fans. It can be done.
